Kris Calvin Interview - Under a Broken Sky

Photo Content from Kris Calvin Award-winning author Kris Calvin served as a local elected official and CEO of a nonprofit, nonpartisan, children's advocacy organization before turning to writing thrillers and mysteries full-time. A single mom, Kris and her kids live with black cat Nigel, Bernese Mountain Dog puppy Fox, and two recently rescued orange tabby kittens, Eddy and Ellis, (brothers!) found on the streets of San Francisco.             What was the single worst distraction that kept you from writing this book?Under A Broken Sky is the first book I’ve written start to finish on a contract with a publisher. I had a year in which to do it, a tight timeline since I don’t outline, which means I can go...

Take 5: A Tinted Glassware Obsession, Double Duty Vase + More

1. Pleated Pitcher by Areaware My fiancé and I are getting hitched this year, and this Areaware Pitcher was one of the first things we added to our registry. I love the juxtaposition of the sculptural, pleated form with its smooth, curved handle. But what I love even more is the fact that it doubles as a gorgeous flower vase – earning it permanent residence on our tabletop. I can already see myself pouring batch cocktails out of this beauty for guests! It’ll fit right in with my favorite Greenery Unlimited planter, too! $95 Shop Now >>   2. Stewart Coffin: Paddle-maker Turned Puzzle-maker

If you Google my name, you will find me listed as a designer and maker of geometric puzzles. Actually, I prefer to call my woodcraft “AP-ART, the sculptural art that comes apart,” as the word “puzzle” can sound too much like jigsaw puzzles. Fifty years ago, you might have found me listed as a maker of canoe and kayak paddles. My paddles were much in demand, especially by racers. They were big and strong, and rarely if ever broke. I also made fiberglass kayaks, being a pioneer in that business. This six-piece Star puzzle is shown here in three contrasting woods: canarywood, walnut and yellowheart. What brought that otherwise successful venture to an end was being sickened by the noxious...

Absolutely! “Grease” has always been designed to push all our sentimental buttons. In 1971, it was a comic and honest look at working class teens in Chicago. Most have no idea how foul-mouthed and accurately raunchy the original version was. It was a send-up of a time that was beginning to be idolized by conservatives as it was ending — a...
