The Ultimate Denver Father’s Day Weekend

There’s an incredible bond between a father and his children. It’s a connection forged through years of love and sacrifice. When you’re a child, you see your dad as a superhero—a larger-than-life presence who seems to do no wrong. As you get older, you begin to realize he’s just a man, fighting the same quirks and limitations we all do. The reality is this only deepens our respect for our fathers because being heroic isn’t being gifted with superpowers or immense talent; it’s waking up every day and doing the right thing for your family even when it’s hard. Those are actual heroes, and it’s great we can set aside a day to honor that dedication.

The cat is out of the bag! It’s not just us that know Denver is one of the best places to live. A recent article by US News ranked Denver as the number 2 city in the nation to call home.  Take advantage of all this great town has to offer by treating your dad to an unforgettable Father’s Day experience. Need some tips?  Below is our perfect weekend, starting Friday night thru Sunday evening.

Friday Night – Film on the Rocks

Specifically, Friday night, head out to Morrison and take in Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark. There’s no better way to start Father’s Day weekend than with one of the best adventure films ever made. It doesn’t hurt when the movie is playing at Red Rocks, one of the most beautiful venues in the world.

A young Harrison Ford paired with Spielberg filming jaw-dropping action set pieces results in a film that never lets up and comes pretty close to being perfect.

Saturday Morning – Breakfast at Root Down

Sunday morning, you’ll want to fuel up, so stop by the Root Down in LoHi.  A part of local restaurant group Edible Eats, this upbeat gem boasts one of the best breakfasts in all of Denver. Be sure to try the Fried Chicken and Goat Cheese Biscuit or Almond Pancakes.  To catch a little buzz before your big day, sip on some bubbles with their infamous Blood Orange Mimosa.

Be sure to make a reservation ASAP, as their brunch is hard to get into, even on a typical weekend.

Saturday Afternoon – Go for a Hike at Golden Gate Canyon

After fueling up, it’s time to head out to enjoy the great outdoors. One of the best hikes in Colorado is a short drive to the gorgeous city of Golden.

With family-friendly trails for a wide variety of skill levels and picturesque vistas of lakes and mountains, Golden Gate Canyon is a true Colorado gem.

Saturday Night – Dinner at Buckhorn Exchange

If food can be a masculine adventure replete with history and American West bravado, that meal is found at the Buckhorn Exchange. The restaurant was opened in 1893 by Henry H. “Shorty Scout” Zietz. He was a member of Buffalo Bill Cody’s scouts and rode and toured with Cody and the legendary Chief Sitting Bull, who gave Zietz his nickname.

In 1905 Teddy Roosevelt’s presidential train stopped at the restaurant for dinner and drinks. The next day Zietz and the great frontiersman president headed off to the Western slope for big game hunting. Today the restaurant continues this Western Spirit and serves excellent steaks and bison. Also, look out for more exotic fare like rattlesnake and Rocky Mountain oysters.

Sunday Morning – Breakfast at Denver Biscuit Co.

Father’s Day is notoriously a busy breakfast holiday, which means it’s challenging to get into most restaurants without reservations weeks in advance.  Denver Biscuit Co. is a local charm with four locations throughout Denver.  They have both in-house dining, delivery, and pick-up, so you will be assured to grub down on Sunday morning.

We recommend trying The Lola – buttermilk fried chicken, bacon, housemade honey butter, covered in maple syrup, and built-on french toast!

Sunday Afternoon – Colorado Rockies Game

If the dad in your life still has energy, then head over to Coors Field for the 1:00 pm game between the Rockies and the Milwaukee Brewers.

This stadium is one of the most beautiful in the entire Major Leagues. Grab a Rockie’s dog and a cold beer. The experience at Coors Field is perhaps above any in the entire league, which explains why LoDo will host the upcoming 2021 All-Star Game.

Sunday Afternoon – Juneteenth Street Festival

In the afternoon, you can head over to the Juneteenth celebration, with events all over the city. Juneteenth celebrates when slaves from Texas learned of their freedom after the Emancipation Proclamation.

Denver has an incredible Black history worth reading up on. With one of the oldest Juneteenth events in the country, it’s a celebration of Black culture and arts along with Black-owned businesses and their contributions to Denver.

Sunday Night – Dinner at Jax Fish House

Jax Fish House has three excellent locations in Colorado: LoDo (1539 17th Street), Glendale (650 South Colorado Boulevard), and Boulder (928 Pearl Street).  They offer a wonderful Father’s Day Special – get a classic surf and turf — New York strip steak and Maine lobster tail, asparagus, red potatoes, and demi-glace — for $55 per person (the take-home version feeds two for $110).

You can also add on a bottle of Willamette Valley Sineann Jax Pinot Noir for just $25, less than half price.  This deal also applies to take-out.  Be sure to reserve your meal before Friday, June 19th.
