A once-a-year delicacy, white asparagus is beloved and highly sought-after by chefs and dining aficionados alike for its unique characteristics – more delicate, faintly sweeter, less bitter, and more tender than its well-known green variety. White asparagus is very popular in Europe and western Asia. White asparagus is the result of applying a blanching technique while the asparagus shoots are growing. To cultivate white asparagus, the shoots are covered with soil as they grow, i.e. earthed up; without exposure to sunlight, no photosynthesis starts, and the shoots remain white and the resultant spears are cultivated while still tender and delicate. With food prices on the rise and a desire to reduce food waste for environmental reasons as well, we all want to stock our refrigerators but also make sure that the food is stored correctly and will last to at least their best before dates, potentially beyond. This, however, requires different conditions and storage tips depending on what type of food you’re talking about. I covered ways to get the most out of your produce in a recent article, including how best to store various fruits and vegetables that require refrigeration (and which ones do not). But what about when it comes to meat and poultry? Leftovers? Even condiments. Here are some tips and tricks along with a handy guide for...
“Too much shellfish (oysters, of course) and alcohol (festival life!), and not enough water might have exacerbated this bout,” emailed Europe-based film critic C.M. after waking up on her final morning in New Orleans for the Tennessee Williams Festival with the excruciating pain of gout. What could have helped: avoiding beer, organ meat, and tuna; also, drinking coffee and eating cherries!Only after an ER nurse asked about gout did C.M. remember her diagnosis from years before, but because that had been for a swollen big toe, the classic location for gout, she hadn’t made the connection when intense pain struck her ankle. Also, as she noted, “It’s more common for men to have gout—and I’m not overweight or a drinker...
While some European airlines have offered premium economy for decades, Dutch carrier KLM was relatively late to the party, only launching its Premium Comfort product in September last year. Eight of the airline’s Boeing Dreamliners are now fitted with the new seats, with its remaining wide-body fleet of Boeing 777s and Dreamliners expected to be retrofitted by June 2024. The 787-10 Dreamliner operates from KLM’s hub at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) to several U.S. destinations, including Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and San Francisco International Airport (SFO). KLM impressed TPG’s Zach Griff on the inaugural Premium Comfort flight in 2022, so as a frequent premium economy traveler myself, I was keen to see if it was worth the hype between...
