Favorite Turkey Recipes for Thanksgiving

Turkey can be one of the more virtuous foods on our plate: Plain-roasted and skinless, it’s a low-fat, high-protein meat that partners up nicely with a modest kale salad, say, or some grilled asparagus with a twist of lemon. But that’s not quite the kind of turkey we’re talking here. When it’s time to set the table for a family get-together or a holiday feast, you’ve got to bring the flavor with a whole bird, skin-on, that’s been brined, rubbed, glazed, and/or basted into glistening deliciousness and ready to be surrounded by equally mouthwatering side dishes. And we’ve put together a collection of our favorite Thanksgiving turkey recipes to help you do just that. Since this will henceforth be known as a dog blog, let’s start with a Finley update! I was exhausted yesterday and went to bed at 9:15. David had a call so he stayed up until 10:00, when he took Finley out and then to the crate. At 4:00 AM I heard her whine and jumped up, feeling terrible I had let David take on the full night duty. Then back to the crate, where I slept on the floor next to her until we all got up at 6:00 AM. When...

Twisted Asparagus Salad

Does the title of this post weird you out? I promise this is a super easy recipe that makes an healthy lunch. The idea for this recipe sort of fell into my lap. We have an abundance of eggs from our chickens, and leftover ham in the freezer. Then while I was wandering the produce section of Meijer I came across this package of asparagus with garlic butter and a lightbulb went off in my head. I cut asparagus into thirds, and cubed a cup of ham while the butter melted in a large sauté pan over medium heat. Then I sautéed them ham and asparagus for 8 minutes. This can be done way ahead of time. That way it...

The First Chinese Restaurants In Vermont

What were the first Chinese restaurants in Vermont? When I recently consulted the Chinese Commercial Directory of United States, Eastern Section, 1925-1926, it offered listings of the Chinese restaurants and laundries in all of the New England states. For Vermont, there were only 5 listings, including four Chinese laundries and one restaurant, the Star Restaurant at 144 Church Street in Burlington.I was curious at the paucity of Chinese restaurants in Vermont at that time, so I chose to delve deeper into its history, to seek out the earliest Chinese restaurants in Vermont and also determine if the directory was fully accurate or not. It might have been difficult in 1925-26 to compile information on all of the various Chinese restaurants in...
